Private Instrument Flight Rating (PIFR)

The Private Instrument Flight Rating ensures an extra level of safety when flying in deteriorating weather. The licences is desigined for Private Pilots who wish to increase their skill level while also increasing their opptunity to fly when low cloud or other bad weather permits.

 

The PIFR permits flight into Instrument Meteorology Conditions (IMC) while enroute but does not allow instrument departure and approach procedures.

 

Requirements for the issue of a Private Instrument Flight Rating:

  • Hold a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL).

  • Minimum 20 hours instrument time, of which 10 hours must be dual instrument flight time in the category of aircraft for which the rating is sought.

  • Pass a written examination.

  • Pass a PIFR flight test.
